Blepharoplasty, more commonly known as eyelid surgery, is a surgical procedure designed to improve the patient’s appearance by reducing the bags and sagging skin that occurs on the eyelids. This is achieved by removing excess skin and fat from the upper and lower eyelids.

Because the eyelid skin is thin and delicate, this part of the body is much more sensitive to aging. Therefore this can cuse wrinkling and falling of the eyelashes on the upper eyelids. However, on the lower eyelid folds, we can sometimes see that fat accumulates leading to unsightly bags or dark circles, which give you a tired or sick look. It is very important to know the health of your eyes, since the function of the eyelids is to protect them. Dr. Martínez Gutiérrez is an ophthalmologist and plastic surgeon, therefore he will ensure the health of your eyes while improving the aesthetics of your eyes by an intervention, which in his hands is safe and reliable.

What is the procedure?

Eyelid surgery is performed in an operating room, either in a clinic or hospital. Not always requires hospitalization, and if necessary it will be for a short period. Is usually performed under local anesthesia and sedation, unless part of a more complex intervention, such as a face lift, in which case it is used general anesthesia. The procedure usually takes an hour and a half.

Eyelid surgery is performed through incisions in the skin of the eyelids, in strategic areas so that the scars are not visible then. The surgeon uses the natural lines of expression or the inside of the eyelids. During surgery, the surgeon removes excess skin, fat and muscle. After the operation, a fine sutures are made to leave no trace.

After surgery, apply an ointment to lubricate the eyes and a dressing with cold saline to reduce discomfort and swelling. The results of blepharoplasty are durable and, in general, eyelid bags usually not reappear.

Are there risks?

Eyelid surgery done by expert hands is a safe procedure with excellent results in most cases. You should know that after surgery, for a few days you may have some swelling around the eye and the typical “bloodshot eyes” disappear in about 5 or 7 days.

Minor complications can occur after surgery, which resolved over time, such as: temporary dry eye requiring the use of eye drops, red eye, grittiness, sensitivity to light, and even some difficulty closing the eyelids completely until the tissue adapts to changes.

When I can get back to work?

After a couple of days, most patients can read or watch TV, however, during the first week, it is normal that the swelling and bruises of the lids persist. Most patients return to their normal lives in a week, until then you must not use contact lenses.
