Breast reduction, technically known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure which aims to reduce breast size to be proportional to the body, so as to reduce the aches and pains resulting from overweight.

With this type of intervention we can improve the shape of those who believe they have the areola or breast too big. Basically what we do is remove excess fat, tissue and skin so that the patient has a lighter and firmer breasts.

In the first consultation, Dr. Martínez Gutiérrez must estimate the size and shape of the breast, skin firmness and overall health to choose the surgical technique that will offer the best possible outcome for each case.

What is the procedure?

The breast reduction surgery is performed in an operating either in a clinic or hospital. Generally required hospitalization, and you must stay one or two days. Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia, so the patient is asleep during the operation, which usually lasts between two and three hours.

Breast reduction is usually performed through incisions around the areola, vertical and / or horizontal (inverted T-shaped), in a vertical line down from the areola and a horizontal line in the groove underneath the breast.

Through these incisions, the surgeon performs the procedure and replace the areola and nipple in place. Depending on the case, the patient has a normal or near-normal sensitivity, only when it comes to large breast reductions the patient may lose sensitivity.

After surgery, sometimes placed drainage tubes and a bandage around the breasts. After a few days you can use a special bra as directed by the surgeon.

    Are there risks?
As in any other operation may be risks typical of an operation, which, however, in the hands of a qualified plastic surgeon are very small. The drawbacks associated with this type of surgery are healing problems, partial or total reduction of nipple sensation, and the possible loss of ability to breast-feed, which can occur in approximately 50% of cases.
When I can get back to work?
After undergoing breast reduction patients can return to normal in a few days, although it is normal to feel tired. You can return to work in two or three weeks, and you should avoid physical exertion for several weeks.
I have pain after the operation?
With medication prescribed by the doctor, the aches and pains will be controlled, however, during the two weeks following the operation, and at the next menstruation may feel some pain.
    Does it go away scars?
In breast reduction scars are necessary, depending on the case will consist of a scar around the areola plus a vertical line up the groove under the breast, and in cases of large breasts also another horizontal scar “T” along the groove under the breast. These scars are more visible at first but with a good sun protection cream and some care, they will gradually decline and dissembling. This process is strongly influenced by the ability of individual patient healing.
