The tummy tuck, also called abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that tightens the skin of the abdomen to correct sagging and excess skin and fat. With this treatment reduces the waist and flattens the abdomen.

To better understand this treatment, we could say that consists of three phases: first stretching the skin of the abdomen, followed by a tightening of the abdominal muscles, and finally a liposuction or liposculpture to remove excess fat.

What is the procedure?

Abdominal surgery is performed in an operating either in a clinic or hospital. Generally, patients entering the day of surgery and are discharged within 1-2 days. This type of operation is performed under general anesthesia.

Abdominoplasty is performed through a long incision that is made from side to side of the hip, just above the pubic bone, remaining hidden under your swimsuit. It also makes a second incision around the navel in order to separate it from the surrounding tissues.
After removing the excess skin and fat is necessary to repair the muscles of the abdomen, which in most cases is weakened, so we get flatten the belly, and also perform liposuction of the areas where there is fat accumulation.

After surgery, drains are placed for two or three days and a tight bandage to reduce swelling.

Are there risks?

As possible complications, though rare, may have infections or hematomas as any intervention. To prevent venous thrombi you should start walking as soon as possible.

One possible consequence of abdominal surgery is the accumulation of fluid under the skin or seroma, which will gradually disappear and only occasionally requires evacuate or drain.

When I can get back to work?

You should wear a girdle or a snug elastic garment for the first month, in order to reduce swelling of the abdomen. Recovery time is about 10 or 15 days, but you may need two or three weeks before returning to work. For a month and a half or two months you should avoid strenuous exercise.
